Via HDStudio,

Thanks to a new licensing agreement with MOG Solutions, Adobe Premier Pro users now have complete access to files wrapped in the MXF (the Material Exchange Format) via Adobe’s CS3 video-editing software. This enables it to support more camera formats, workflows, and some neat time-saving tricks.

Though MXF gets a fair amount of ink, it remains a mysterious concept to many video users. But it’s going to matter soon, so it’s time to at least give a simple explanation.

This SMPTE-approved standard file format enables both the audiovisual material and its related information to be carried in a video file. This information, called metadata, could include such things as compression settings, geo-localization data, or even transcripts of the content. Regardless of the data, the entire package of content travels with the video wherever it may go.

The MXF format is already used with Sony’s XDCAM, Panasonic’s P2, Grass Valley’s Infinity, and Ikegami’s EditCam formats. The information starts with the camera and flows through post-production, archive and even through distribution.

MOG Solutions has been working with various manufacturers, systems integrators, and users to enhance video workflows by exploiting the capabilities of MXF for various time-saving tasks. For example, MOG helped NBC use metadata to wade through hundreds of hours of video shot during the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

Comments: Well, from hereon we can edit P2 media captured via Panasonic HVX202, Varicam series through one of the well acclaimed desktop based editing application Adobe Premiere.
