ARRI ALEXA in-camera recording using AVID’s DNxHD MXF file format

(7 November 2011, Munich) - ARRI announces a major new recording feature for its ALEXA camera range, offering in-camera support for Avid®’s open standard and widely adopted Avid DNxHD® codec.

The ability to record native Avid DNxHD, as MXF files in-camera, creates a unique proposition for the 35 mm digital capture industry and is another first for the ALEXA camera system. The combination of ARRI ALEXA quality and mission-critical reliability with Avid’s respected codec and editing technology delivers a powerful, uncomplicated workflow into the film and broadcast TV market, building on ALEXA’s position as the first choice digital camera for capture and postproduction.

As a benefit to cinematic productions, ALEXA cameras record ARRIRAW uncompressed 3K images that preserve the true 35 mm ‘digital negative’ for mastering and feature archival. Expanding ALEXA’s parallel recording capability to include native support for Avid DNxHD eliminates a transcoding step for the dailies generated by the Avid editing system and creates a more streamlined editorial workflow with seamless final conformance back to the archived ARRIRAW digital negative.

Neil Fanthom, ARRI’s head of digital camera strategy, comments, “The Avid editorial environment is an important cornerstone of the broadcast and motion picture postproduction industry, and ARRI is very pleased to be able to provide Avid DNxHD MFX file-based recording within the ALEXA camera for Avid-centric productions. This further confirms our commitment to add significant ongoing value to the ALEXA camera family, in this case by allowing customers to choose which workflow suits their own capture and postproduction requirements. No other camera in this industry fulfils such diverse workflow needs.”

Angus Mackay, pro video segment marketing manager at Avid, says, “The Avid Media Composer family of non-linear editing systems, featuring the high quality, low bandwidth SMPTE standard Avid DNxHD codec, are the industry’s first choice for professional editorial. By providing native Avid DNxHD recording with the ALEXA camera, ARRI is allowing producers to use high quality ALEXA cameras and quickly and easily view dailies, and begin editorial, without the need to transcode or re-wrap footage. Media Composer version 6 now offers the Avid DNxHD444 codec, which will permit customers to preserve the high color information in ALEXA footage while still having a low bit rate codec suitable for editorial. This is great news for ARRI and Avid customers, who will benefit from the advantages in quality, speed and streamlined workflows.”

The Avid DNxHD recording function for ALEXA will be distributed as a cost-effective, downloadable software upgrade during January 2012 and is now entering Beta phase testing with selected broadcast productions. Avid DNxHD codec data rates of up to 145Mbit/s (bit depth 8 bit) and 220MBit/s (bit depth 10 bit) will be supported in the initial release. Avid’s highest quality version of the codec, Avid DNxHD 444, will record at 440Mbit/s at 10 bit depth and will be provided as an upgrade for all adopting customers later on during the first quarter of 2012.

Full 64-bit power

Fast gets even faster with native 64-bit operation, so even when you layer together the most complex effects, things will still feel snappy. Experience smoother playback, faster rendering performance, and better handling with large bins—and say goodbye to the old memory limitations of the 32-bit operating systems. (Still need 32-bit? Learn more about Media Composer 5.5)

Better performance—and 3D—with Avid hardware

For the fastest capture/edit/monitor/output workflows, pair Media Composer with a Nitris DX or Mojo DX video interface and experience hardware-accelerated power that’s second to none. You can now even customize Nitris DX with up to two Avid DNxHD or AVC-Intra chips to fully support stereoscopic 3D and HD RGB 4:4:4 workflows.

Open for business

Media Composer is now fully open thanks to Avid Open I/O, so you can work with your choice of Avid audio and video interfaces or third-party video interfaces, including those from AJA, Blackmagic Design, Bluefish444, Matrox, and MOTU. Manufacturers can simply create plug-ins using Avid Open I/O to have their hardware work with Media Composer, meaning you’ll have even more choices to come. See all supported hardware.

Sleek new look and Avid Marketplace

Modern, smart, and sexy. Media Composer has a whole new look, but its familiar editing workflow stays the same (watch the video). Work faster through the tabbed interface (no more window clutter!). Customize window configurations with Workspaces. Browse the Avid Marketplace for stock footage, video and audio plug-ins, software and hardware options, training materials, and more—right from within the app. You can even access user guides and other documentation without having to scour our website.

Capture, edit, and manage the complete 3D end-to-end workflow. Mix and match 2D and stereoscopic 3D clips on the same track. Plus, work with full frame and frame-compatible sources, full-fledged editing tools, video effects, and more.

Go hands-on with Artist Color

Accelerate your color correcting and grading with Artist Color (watch the video). With its highly responsive feel, you can keep your eyes on the picture instead of the interface while you make adjustments. And since you can tweak multiple parameters at once, you dramatically gain more speed and efficiency to complete time-consuming tasks quickly.

Get a jumpstart on reviewing footage without the wait, and avoid bringing in unwanted material. And as new cameras and formats emerge, manufacturers can create and release their own AMA plug-ins independently from a Media Composer release.

in V3.5, Media Composer support left and right eyes sources as an over/under file. This means that the left eye is 1920 x 540 and is on the top part of the frame, and the right eye is also 1920 x 540 and is the bottom part of the frame. So the single 1920 x 1080 contains both eyes. Avid MetaFuze can create this format from a series of left and right sources. MetaFuze is a free download available from www.avid.com/metafuze

Once in Avid, there are settings to allow the source/record monitor to show left or right eye only, and while in Full screen mode, there is a setting to output “cherkerboard” over the DVI. With a compatible monitor that supports this mode, you can view the footage as stereo 3D. These monitors are available from Mitsubishi and Samsung and use active shutter glasses. These monitors are rear screen DLP – get the 1080p version with 120Hz. I use a DVI to HDMI cable from my graphics card.

Via Studio Monthly

Step 1: Understand the RED File Format

You need to know what the naming schema is for the native.r3d files created by the RED ONE camera. Here’s how to read the metadata:

Step 2 Create an ALE File (More Metadata Mapping)

Further metadata mapping depends on how your source metadata file is created. In this tutorial, the source metadata file is an Avid Log Exchange (Avid ALE), which will be created with MetaCheater and then imported into your Avid. As in all QuickTime source-based workflows, an ALE file must be imported beforehand. The sources are then “merged” during import. For a complete description of Avid’s extensive metadata management, download the Avid Metadata and Logging and Tracking whitepaper from Avid’s site (www.avid.com/resources/whitepapers).

Step 3 Download Metacheater

MetaCheater is a free application created by Jabez Olssen (donations appreciated) to allow Metadata extraction from QuickTime movies (reel ID and timecode). MetaCheater reads the filename, reel ID and timecode from a QT file and saves out an ALE file, in this example, as exported by RED ALERT! (QT reference). Go here to download the latest version: www.staticpictures.com/metacheater.

Step 4 Map More Data in Metacheater

The following section defines the Avid bin columns and how they track the metadata derived from the.r3d files. Your settings let you control different levels of filename to tape ID to create unique tape names that are more specific. For example: A001_C001_071206

TAPE

A001 (default)

A001_C001

A001_C001_07126

SHOOT DATE: 071206

NAME

A001_C001_011206_001

A001_C001_011206_001_M

RED ALERT! adds the quality suffix and refers to the quality of the debayering process.

_H (High. Uses the 2K extraction)

_M (Medium. Uses the 1K extraction)

_P (Proxy)

FILENAME

A001_C001_07126 is added to Filename as a separate metadata field, which means you can change the clip name to something more relevant.

DPX

A001_C001_07126-000000

The filename is appended with -000000 to track DPX export, if used.

xx:xx:xx:xx (timecode) = Start

Read from file

Step 5 Create QuickTimes with Red Alert!

RED ALERT! currently exports QuickTime references in three resolution from the original file: High (2K), Medium (1K) or Proxy (_H, _M, and _P). Your transcode times will obviously differ if you use _H or _M. Based on experience, _M is roughly 20% faster. Both are more than satisfactory for offline editing. Don’t use _P.As a point of reference, here are the approximate times it took to import on a MacBook Pro directly in Avid Media Composer as Avid DNxHD 36:

6 – 8x longer than real time for the _H file (2K)

4 – 5x longer than real time for the _M file (1K)

f processing files for use on a different system, you can create DNxHD via QT MoviePlayer Pro and select your desired Avid DNxHD codec from the codec options.

Step 6 Create Your Settings for ALE with MetaCheater

Opening the QuickTime files will automatically populate the data fields in the window. In the upper right section, select the amount of metadata you want to use for the Tape name. The default is what is reported in the QuickTime file. Go to “Settings” and select the settings for the Avid project type: 1080, then frame rate as shot (23.976, 24, 25). Go back to the main page and save as ALE file (see images 6A and 6B). Your resulting ALE file, as saved from MetaCheater, will look like the file below.

Step 7 Batch Import Your Metadata into the Avid

In order to facilitate the merge process, you should have all clips form an ALE point to the same directory. Do this by first dragging all the QuickTimes into a single folder. Next, you’ll create an ALE file of all the QuickTimes in that folder using MetaCheater. Import the ALE file into the Avid and select all the clips. Then, choose Batch Import from the Clip menu and navigate to a folder with QT files. Select the desired Avid resolution (DNxHD 36, DNxHD 115, DNxHD 175, DNxHD 175x (10 bit). Import! Once imported, your original RED files will have the necessary metadata attached for editorial and export to your EDL . Take a look inside Media Composer’s EDL Manager to see your files.

Step 8 You’re Ready to Edit

You can use this method to merge metadata from any QuickTime or sequential file format during the import process. In this example, the ALE was created using MetaCheater to read Reel ID and timecode from the QuickTime references created by RED ALERT! and saved out as an Avid ALE file. After importing the ALE file into Avid Media Composer, it’s easy to merge with the QuickTime references of the.r3d files during the batch import process. Once you’re done editing, you can generate an EDL and return to the original files as needed.Tools Used: Avid Media Composer, MetaCheater and RED ALERT!by
